Greenhouse Pioneer
Riccardo Segat, ReGen Future Capital

We want to share the story of the inspiring and visionary entrepreneur, Riccardo Segat, Founder of ReGen Future Capital and his mission to use the power of finance and the capital markets to drive ecosystems restoration at scale.

We caught up with Riccardo to learn more about what he is working on, what inspires and drives him, and why he has chosen to dedicate his life to creating positive environmental, social and financial impact.

1. Tell us, in 20 words or fewer, about your company – what’s its mission?

ReGen Future Capital’s purpose is to reconnect humanity with nature. Our mission is to reconnect financial capital with natural capital via a regenerative investment model.

We restore nature’s damaged ecosystems generate positive returns, for all stakeholders.

Here is a video interview we put together on Riccardo and his story.

2. What drives you?

Legacy. For me it’s about leaving behind a better planet than the one I currently live in for my children and younger generations. A place where we reconnect with nature and recognise its value and our way of functioning, our model aligns with that new way of thinking.

3. What is your greatest achievement to date?

Developing a holistic business model that rethinks the way we look at the world, reconnecting people with nature, and addresses the climate emergency by restoring critical ecosystems.

4. What are you working on that’s getting you fired up and excited?

Everything we’re working on is exciting. We’re involved in multiple projects and have partners across the globe: from regenerative agriculture in the USA and restoring mangroves in Myanmar, to a carbon credit registry blockchain solution and to developing solar energy farm in Brazil.

I’m using all my skills developed in the last 30 years to put together a solution that will play a part in resolving the climate crisis and address some of the social issues that are the result of the current linear economy we follow.

This is a hero film that we worked on with ReGen Future Capital.

5. What are the challenges you face?

I’d say the main challenge we face is resistance to change. We’re building a new relationship between money and nature, rethinking a model that has been in place for decades and changing it means resistance will come, as happens with any form of change.

However, we’ve seen in the past weeks amid this global health crisis that we have become disconnected with the natural world. It is clear that business-as-usual is obsolete and is not the way forward. Covid-19 gives us the opportunity to build back better and collectively progress to a more regenerative economic model where we align our values with nature.

6. Where do you want to take your business next?

We want to develop a regenerative finance model that can be adopted/implemented on a global scale. ReGen Future Capital’s mission is to profoundly transform the way we interact with nature AND achieve a global impact and this is what we think of every day, looking for partners and ‘families’ to connect and collaborate with to make this happen.

7. What can we, as individuals, do to make a difference?

All individual contributions are relevant and meaningful. It is the sums of those small or big collective actions that will make a difference. It is when we come together working in the same direction that we will make a difference, not just one individual for himself.

8. Can you recommend a life- or game-changing book for our readers?

  • Blue economy – Gunter Pauli
  • Drawdown – Paul Hawken

9. How is what you are doing inspiring change in others?

By focusing on my actions, and by showing that you need to go above money to feel fulfilled. If we all focus on changing ourselves first, then everything else around us will change. It is important to take one day at a time.

Use compassion, empathy and love, not fear.

10. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given

I was once told that, in order to execute a large vision, we need to do it one step at a time, following the guidance of intuition and not just the brain. My brain would most likely tell me what I want…not what is needed.

11. What do you listen to when you’re cooking dinner?

It’s a real mix. I often listen to Lodovico Einaudi (an Italian Pianist), Coldplay or just general compilation of chill out tunes.

12. Finally, who is your eco-hero?

I believe that we are all heroes when we have the courage to change.

We’re proud to work alongside Riccardo and ReGen Future Capital – from developing the branding, website, hero and founder films to share his story, to social media and traditional media.
